Development of a classical force field for the oxidized Si surface: application to hydrophilic wafer bonding.

چکیده
We have developed a classical two- and three-body interaction potential to simulate the hydroxylated, natively oxidized Si surface in contact with water solutions, based on the combination and extension of the Stillinger-Weber potential and of a potential originally developed to simulate SiO(2) polymorphs. The potential parameters are chosen to reproduce the structure, charge distribution, tensile surface stress, and interactions with single water molecules of a natively oxidized Si surface model previously obtained by means of accurate density functional theory simulations. We have applied the potential to the case of hydrophilic silicon wafer bonding at room temperature, revealing maximum room temperature work of adhesion values for natively oxidized and amorphous silica surfaces of 97 and 90 mJm(2), respectively, at a water adsorption coverage of approximately 1 ML. The difference arises from the stronger interaction of the natively oxidized surface with liquid water, resulting in a higher heat of immersion (203 vs 166 mJm(2)), and may be explained in terms of the more pronounced water structuring close to the surface in alternating layers of larger and smaller densities with respect to the liquid bulk. The computed force-displacement bonding curves may be a useful input for cohesive zone models where both the topographic details of the surfaces and the dependence of the attractive force on the initial surface separation and wetting can be taken into account.

Investigation of Au/Si Eutectic Wafer Bonding for MEMS Accelerometers
Au/Si eutectic bonding is considered to BE a promising technology for creating 3D structures and hermetic packaging in micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) devices. However, it suffers from the problems of a non-uniform bonding interface and complex processes for the interconnection of metal wires. This paper presents a novel Au/Si eutectic wafer bonding structure and an implementation method...
متن کاملSpontaneous direct bonding of thick silicon nitride
Wafers with 1 μm LPCVD silicon-rich nitride layers have been successfully direct bonded to silicon-rich nitride and boron-doped silicon surfaces. A chemical–mechanical polishing treatment was necessary to reduce the surface roughness of the nitride before bonding. The measured surface energies of the room-temperature bond were comparable to values found for Si–Si hydrophilic bonding. A mechanis...
متن کاملWafer Bonding Techniques for Microsystem Packaging
In this paper, the development of wafer bonding techniques of the most frequently used materials Si-to-glass, glass-to-glass and Si-to-Si is reported. To improve the bond quality of Si-to-glass and make glass-to-glass bonding viable at bonding temperatures less than 300 C, a hydrogen-free amorphous silicon layer of 20-100 nm thickness is deposited as an intermediate layer. For Si-to-glass bondi...
متن کاملHydrophobic silicon wafer bonding
Wafers prepared by an HF dip without a subsequent water rinse were bonded at room temperature and annealed at temperatures up to 1100 “C. Based on substantial differences between bonded hydrophilic and hydrophobic Si wafer pairs in the changes of the interface energy with respect to temperature, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we suggest that h...
متن کاملCharacterization of Hysteresis of Surface Energy in Room-Temperature Direct Bonding Processes
Room temperature direct wafer bonding is driven by surface forces and the formation of hydrogen bonds that pull the wafers being bonded into intimate contact. The magnitude of these forces is often represented as a work of adhesion, and is critical as it determines the level of non-flatness and patterning that may be tolerated in bonding. Traditionally, it has been assumed that the work of adhe...
